Home Automation for Elderly Parents: A Family's Guide
In every other room we automate, the person paying for the system is the person living in it. Here they are two different people, and that single fact changes almost every decision.
Automate the things your parents already do rather than the things the system can do. In practice that means four priorities, roughly in this order: lighting on the night-time route to the bathroom, wall controls that work without a phone, door access that does not depend on keys, and climate they never have to hunt a remote for. Everything must keep working when the internet does not, and the app should be for you, not for them.
Most conversations about home automation for elderly parents in India start in the wrong place, with a list of devices.
They usually start after something small has happened. A stumble on the way to the bathroom. A missed doorbell. A house key handed to one more person. A phone call where a parent mentions, lightly, that the fan remote has gone missing again. The instinct is to buy something, and the market is happy to sell a box.
The problem is that a smart home built for a 68 year old parent by a 38 year old child usually gets designed around the child's comfort with technology, not the parent's. It gets an app, a set of clever scenes, and a name for every routine. Six weeks later half of it is unused and one switch has been taped over.
What follows is how we approach it instead, drawn from homes AHA has commissioned across Mumbai where a parent, and often a full-time helper, is the person actually living with the system. It assumes the parents live in their own flat, either alone or with a helper, and that at least one adult child is somewhere else. If your parents live with you, most of this still applies, but the sections on remote support and access for helpers matter less.
1. Start from a week of their life, not a catalogue
Before anything is specified, it helps to write down what actually happens in that home on an ordinary day. Not what could be improved. What happens.
What time do the lights go on in the morning, and who turns them on? Which lamp is used for reading, and is it the right one or just the closest one? How many times a night does someone get up? Who comes to the door, and at what times? Which fan or air conditioner is used, and where does its remote live? Is there a mandir, and what time is it lit?
The value of this list is that it produces automations nobody has to remember to use, because they map onto something already happening. A light that comes on by itself at 2am is used every single night without a decision being made. A scene called "Relax Mode" is used twice and then forgotten. The difference is not the technology. It is whether the automation is attached to an existing habit or a new one.
This is also the moment to be honest about what is genuinely a problem and what is your own anxiety. Automating a home is not a way of being more present. It is a way of removing a handful of specific daily frictions, which is worth doing on its own terms.
2. The walk to the bathroom at 2am is the whole reason to do this
If you do nothing else in the house, do this room and this route.
The sequence is familiar to anyone who has stayed in a parent's home. They wake, they do not want to switch on a bright overhead light because it wakes the whole flat and it takes several minutes for their eyes to recover, so they walk in the dark along a route they know. They are half asleep. There may be a step, a threshold, a chair that was moved that afternoon.
The fix is a motion sensor at the bedside, positioned to fire the moment feet touch the floor. It brings up an under-bed LED, a table lamp or a soft ceiling light at low brightness, enough to see the route, not enough to wake anyone or shock the eyes. This is the Midnight Walk scene, and it is the single most requested thing we build into a parent's home.
The bathroom itself needs a different sensor, and this distinction matters more than it sounds. An ordinary motion sensor switches the light off when it stops seeing movement. Somebody standing still at the basin, or sitting, is not moving enough, and the light goes out on them. That is a worse situation than no automation at all.
So the bathroom gets a human presence sensor instead. It uses millimetre-wave radar and detects genuine occupancy down to the movement of breathing, over a range of about nine feet. It holds a low, steady brightness while somebody is in the room, whether or not they are moving, and clears once they leave. It needs a phase and neutral connection, so it is a planned fitting rather than a battery unit stuck to a wall.
Around this, the lighting schedule shifts through the day on its own: bright and neutral through the daytime, warmer through the evening, and into the low night setting after around 8pm or 9pm. Bathroom exhaust fans and an aroma diffuser can sit on the same schedule. Nobody sets any of it. It simply is what the house does at that hour.
One detail worth insisting on: the light level for this scene should be set with your parent standing in the room at night, not chosen from a chart. What reads as comfortably dim to you at 40 can be genuinely too dark at 70. Eyes take longer to adapt to darkness with age and need more light to resolve the same edge.
Nothing that already worked should stop working. Every light your parents currently switch on at a wall must still switch on at that wall, with the same gesture, whether the hub is running, the internet is down or the app has been deleted. Automation is added around the existing controls, never in place of them.
3. The wall switch is the interface, and the app is for you
This is the part families get wrong most often. The system is demonstrated on a phone, the parent is shown the app, and everyone agrees it looks simple. Then the phone updates, or the icon moves, or the login expires while you are in another city.
Design the house so the phone is never required. AHA's X7 keypad replaces the existing switch plate using the wiring already in the wall, and its buttons have a real physical click rather than a flat touch surface. That click matters more than it sounds: it confirms the press without needing to see an indicator, which is useful for anyone with reduced fine touch sensitivity or slight tremor, and it means the switch can be found and used in the dark by feel.
Each button holds three actions, a single click, a double click and a long press. Restraint is the right instinct here. In a parent's home we would rather program one button well than six buttons cleverly. Label them for what they do in plain language, keep the most used action on the single click, and do not put anything on a long press that somebody needs in a hurry.
Voice assistants are a genuine help for some parents and a frustration for others. They work well for someone with limited mobility and clear speech. They work poorly with significant hearing loss, with a strong regional accent the assistant has not been trained on, or in a flat with a television on. Offer voice as an option, never as the primary route, and note that voice is a cloud service, so it stops during an internet outage while the wall switch does not.
4. Light for older eyes is a different specification
Ageing eyes need more light to read the same page, are more sensitive to glare from a bare bright source, and take longer to recover from a sudden change in brightness. A lighting design that is flattering in a magazine can be genuinely difficult to live in at 75.
Three things follow from that. More light on the task and less on the ceiling, which means the reading corner, the kitchen counter and the wardrobe get proper dedicated light rather than relying on one central fitting. No visible bare lamp in the sight line, because glare is more disabling than dimness. And smooth transitions rather than jumps, so a room comes up gradually instead of snapping to full.
The hardware makes this possible or impossible. AHA controls each lighting circuit on its own driver rather than putting a room on one shared dimmer, so a single scene can hold the downlights low, the cove a little higher and a reading lamp at full. The drivers dim smoothly to around one per cent without flicker and hold their colour temperature as they dim, which is why a warm white stays warm at low levels instead of drifting. Flicker that a younger person does not consciously notice is a common source of eye strain and headache.
For reading specifically, Spotlight Mode puts light on the chair and drops everything around it, which is easier on the eyes than lighting a whole room to the level one book needs.
5. Doors, keys, and the people who come and go
A house key is a small object that has to be found in a bag, aligned with a lock and turned. Every one of those steps gets harder with arthritis or reduced grip strength, and all of them happen while standing in a corridor holding something.
A smart lock removes the sequence rather than improving it. AHA's front door lock opens on face recognition, fingerprint, palm scan or a keypad code, and two physical keys still come with it as a fallback. The battery runs around two to two and a half months on a charge and charges over USB-C, which is a genuine consideration: it is a task somebody has to remember, so it belongs on your calendar rather than theirs.
Two features matter more in a parent's home than they do in yours. When the doorbell rings, the lock's camera activates and the lights blink, which turns a sound into something visible, and that is the difference between answering the door and missing it for anyone with hearing loss. And if somebody tampers with the door, a 30 second alarm sounds locally and an alert reaches your phone.
The access question is the one families underestimate. A parent's home is not a private residence in the way an apartment shared by two working adults is. There is a cook, a cleaner, a physiotherapist, a nurse, a driver, a grandson who visits on Sundays. Every one of them has historically meant a copied key or somebody being home to open the door. Scheduled codes and one-time passwords replace that: a code that works on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and at no other time, revocable from your phone without anyone having to hand anything back. Cleaning Mode covers the other half of that, a single button that gives the helper bright working light without them needing to learn the system.
6. The pooja room, and automating a routine that already means something
This is the part of an Indian parent's day that most guides written elsewhere have no reason to consider, and it is often where the system stops feeling like your idea and starts feeling like theirs.
The mandir has a time. The lamps go on, there is fragrance, sometimes there are bhajans, and it happens at roughly the same hour every day whether or not anybody feels like arranging it. Pooja Mode puts that on the system: the mandir lighting comes up on its own through the smart driver, an aroma diffuser releases fragrance, and a preset scene on a speaker can start the day's bhajans at the right hour.
What is worth noticing here is what automation is not doing. It is not changing the ritual, simplifying it or replacing any part of it. It removes the setup, so the routine is ready rather than arranged. That is the correct relationship between this technology and somebody's daily life, and it is a useful test for every other scene in the house. If an automation is asking your parent to do something differently, it is probably the wrong automation.
The same logic applies to the rest of the day. Curtains that open gradually in the morning rather than in one movement, on Goodmorning Mode, mean nobody has to reach up and pull a heavy drape, which is a small daily strain that adds up. AHA's curtain motors run at 27dB, quiet enough not to be startling, and they are two-way, so if your parent tugs the curtain by hand the app and the wall switch update to match rather than fighting them.
7. Fans, air conditioning, and the remote that is always missing
In a Mumbai summer the fan and the air conditioner are not a comfort question, and a missing remote is a real problem when getting up to look for it is the difficult part.
An IR controller in the room brings the existing air conditioner and television onto the system without replacing either. It searches for the air conditioner's model on its own when it powers up, and one unit usually covers everything within its line of sight. BLDC ceiling fans use a separate RF controller, which is quieter and draws around 60 to 65 per cent less than a standard fan.
Once that is in place the air conditioner can run to a schedule rather than a decision, coming on before the hottest part of the afternoon and settling back at night. The physical remotes keep working as a backup, which is the point. Nothing has been taken away.
One caution: resist the urge to automate temperature aggressively. Older adults often feel cold at settings that seem normal to you, and a scene that drops a room to 22 degrees because it is efficient will get overridden and then resented. Set it where they are comfortable, not where you would be.
8. What this is not, and should not pretend to be
It is worth being direct about the limits, because the emotional weight of this decision makes it easy to hear more than is being offered.
- It is not fall detection No sensor here detects a fall or a person on the floor
- It is not a medical alert Nothing calls an ambulance or a doctor
- It does not monitor health No vital signs, no sleep tracking, no wellness reports
- It is not surveillance Cameras belong at the door, not inside the rooms
- It does not replace care It removes daily friction, not the need for people
The presence sensor in the bathroom detects occupancy so it can hold a light on. It is not watching anyone, it produces no image, and it is not a health device. If a family needs fall detection or an emergency call button, that is a separate category of product with its own regulatory footing, and it should be bought as one rather than assumed to be included here.
The privacy point deserves saying plainly, because it is the objection parents raise most and the one children dismiss too quickly. Being monitored in your own home by your children is a real loss of dignity, and "it is for your safety" does not settle it. Our position is that indoor cameras do not belong in a parent's home unless that parent has asked for them. Door cameras and entry logs answer almost every legitimate worry, and they answer it at the boundary of the home rather than inside it.
9. How to introduce it without it being rejected
The most common failure is not technical. It is that a parent feels their home has been changed around them by somebody who does not live there.
A few things reliably help. Do one room first, and make it the bedroom and its route to the bathroom, because that is where the benefit is felt on the first night rather than explained. Change nothing that already works, so every old switch stays where it was and keeps doing what it did. Let them name things, because a scene called by the name they already use for that part of the day gets used, and a scene named by an installer does not.
Be present for the handover, and then be quiet. The commissioning visit is when scenes are set and adjusted, and your parent should be the one saying whether that light is too bright, not you. Expect to change the settings again after two weeks of real use, because the first version is always a guess. And resist adding more for a while. The strongest signal that this was worth doing is your parent asking for the second room themselves.

10. When you are the one who gets the call
If you do not live in the same city, you become technical support. That is worth designing against.
The first defence is that the system does not depend on the internet. Automations run on a local hub certified for Zigbee 3.0, Matter and Thread, so lights, curtains, scenes and every wall switch keep working with the router unplugged. This matters more than it appears on a specification sheet, because it removes the most common failure your parent could not fix and you could not fix from another city. A broadband outage in their building does not turn their lights off.
The second is that around 95 per cent of issues we see are resolved remotely in under 30 minutes over a phone call or WhatsApp, without a site visit. Component failure runs below half a per cent against an industry average nearer two per cent, across roughly 200 components in an average home. The first year of support is included, and there is an annual plan after that.
The third is a single point of contact. AHA designs, supplies, configures and commissions the system in house, and the people who come to your parents' home to commission it are background verified employees rather than contractors. The client's own electrician mounts and wires the hardware to AHA's specification, and AHA's technicians pair the devices, program the scenes and test everything on site. When something needs attention there is one number, not a chain of vendors each pointing at the other.
A sensible order to do it in
If it helps to have a sequence rather than a list, this is the one we would suggest for most parents' homes, and it is deliberately short.
Start with the bedroom, the route out of it and the bathroom: bedside motion sensor, under-bed or low pathway light, presence sensor in the bathroom, and the evening lighting schedule. Live with it for a few weeks. Then do the front door, the lock and scheduled access for whoever comes and goes. Then the wall controls in the rooms used most, and the air conditioner and fan. The mandir, the curtains and everything else can follow whenever it is wanted, and each addition joins the existing network the moment it is powered on.

Questions families ask us
Will my parents actually use it, or will it end up switched off?
They use the parts that replace an effort they were already making, and ignore the parts that ask them to learn something. A light that comes on by itself at 2am gets used every night without a decision. A scene named after an activity they do not think about gets forgotten. Automate the routine, not the feature list.
What if my parent does not want any of this and says the house is fine as it is?
That objection is usually about losing control of a familiar home, not about the technology. It helps to change nothing they already use: every switch keeps working the way it always did, nothing is removed, and the automation is added quietly around it. Start with one room and let them ask for the second.
Does any of this work if my parent cannot use a smartphone?
Yes. The app is for the family, not for the person living there. Everything is reachable from a wall switch with a physical click, and the parts that matter most, such as night-time pathway lighting, run on sensors and schedules and need no input at all.
Is home automation a medical alert or fall detection system?
No, and it should not be sold as one. The system controls lights, curtains, climate, locks and scenes. It does not detect falls, monitor vital signs or call an ambulance. It reduces some of the situations that lead to a fall, such as walking to the bathroom in the dark, but it is not a substitute for a medical alert device or for care.
What happens during a power cut, or when the internet is down?
Automations run on a hub inside the home, so lighting, curtains, scenes and every wall switch keep working with the router unplugged. Only remote access from outside the home, camera viewing and voice assistants pause. During a power cut the system behaves like the rest of the home and returns to its normal state when power comes back.
Can we start with one room and add more later?
Yes, and for an elderly parent it is usually the better approach. The bedroom, the route to the bathroom and the bathroom itself are the sensible first room. Anything added later joins the existing network when it is powered on, with no rework and no second hub if the first one covers the area.
The measure of whether this worked is not how much of the house is automated. It is whether your parent stopped noticing the parts you changed.
